People often ask me for my restaurant recommendations in Kyoto. There are so many worth a visit that I sometimes find it difficult to even start responding but one place that repeatedly and easily springs to mind is Kezako in Gion (in the street that runs east from the entrance to Kenninji temple that sits right at the end of hanami koji - note this as there are several entrances to Kenninji).

Another fab spot for a casual lunch or an evening drink and meal is the Cubana Cafe in Soho.  Excellent margaritas , great empanadas  tasty salads  hearty sandwiches, roasted meats, rice, beans, all the trimmings  - lots of pungent relishes.    Personable, slightly quirky staff on the floor, mixed crowd, laid back and not taking itself too seriously - all good stuff.

My first Shrimp and Grits - for brunch at Bubby's in Tribeca. Not a bad way to start the day.  Strong neighbourhood vibe, bit of buzz but laid back all the same, decent grub. Good portions. As is common in Japan the restaurant is named after its proprietor - and according to a Japanese Foodie friend Jiki Miyazawa is one of Kyoto's finest young chef's. Once again, in cleaning up some old files I came across some images - from a rather basic (but much loved) old digital camera. It's been many years since I last took a good look at Sydney's Taronga Zoo. I don't remember it being so huge!
