Osteria Ogino

If you are looking for an cosy spot for a bowl of pasta in Kyoto's Heian Shrine vicinity head to 'Ogino' on Nijo Dori.  It's only about a 5 minute walk west from the corner of Jingu michi (which is a block south from the shrine's entrance).

Their Carbonara and Amatriciana, whilst not completely authentic are really delicious, they also do excellent grilled local meats - the pork is sensational. And the chef/owner is a real sweetie with a penchant for dancehall, ska and reggae - particularly The Whaling Whalers -  all on vinyl. There is a small but decent by the glass wine selection. And a couple of desserts.

Open lunches and dinner but see here for details on opening days and hours.
When I say cosy, I mean real cosy - there is this one area at the front which seats upto 6 then 2 tables for 2 in front of the counter which also seats about 3 people. Still it's bigger than some Japanese restaurants! I'm just saying - go solo, take a friend or go in a very small group. In the evenings it is a nice casual spot for couples. We lived about 10 meters away for 6 months and we were regulars - sure it was convenient but the food was really good and at the right price.

Coffee Shop Mika みか

Yet another old school cafe in Kyoto town. When the master is on duty it is a pretty serious scene and a little intimidating at first glance but the vibe is friendly once you make it through the door!

If you are a non smoker you might have to put up with the puffers but the coffee is good and there are a variety of types - including all those fabulous old fashioned treats like Vienna Coffee. Kyoto seems to love the feel of the Euro coffeehaus on the menu and to be quite frank - I don't mind it myself!

In this busy tourist area it can be hard to find a table at times so this is a place worth knowing about as you can pretty much always get a table -which makes things a bit more comfortable when you need a rest stop - if you can ignore the attractive blue green vinyl seating.  The place has been around for a while but it is so super clean and well looked after it could have opened yesterday.

There are some very simple and "tasty" breakfast and lunch choices and it is very close to the Heian Shrine - so if you are sightseeing in the area looking for a caffeine fix and a quick bite it's worth dropping in.
(For other cafes and eateries in the area see my OKAZAKI EATS story here)

You will find Coffee Shop Mika on the north side of Nijo Dori (street) between Higashioji Dori (st) and Jingu Michi (st).
